Camping at the Retreat House Property

This summer things are changing for our Retreat House camping program. We are continuing our evolution into being a destination for spiritual renewal and community building. We have outgrown the Retreat House for safe, code compliant overnight sleeping.

This summer’s youth campers and counselors will stay in large platform tents using bunks or cots. The tents will be located in areas near the Retreat House. The Bunkhouse will also be utilized. The Retreat House has been modified to include one downstairs bedroom for adult volunteers. The upstairs rooms are activity areas for crafts, games, and conversation. The kitchen and dining room will remain the hub for meals.

The CCC Retreat House is located near Yellow spring, WVA on 54 acres of rolling farmland. The nearby Cacapon River provides tubing, variable water hikes, (depending on rainfall and season), and a swimming hole. The surrounding mountains offer hiking and plenty of beautiful scenery.

What Happens at Camp

Summer Camp at the Retreat House property means learning about and living in Christian community.
Christ bids us to love one another, to serve one another, to be forgiving of one another, and to care for all God’s creation. Each day campers take this command to heart as we share the blessed ordinary and extraordinary together. Mornings are generally a time of activity oriented bible study. In large and small groups, campers link scripture with their own lives, discovering that Christian faith is alive in the here and now. The afternoons and evenings are filled with age appropriate games, crafts, hikes, campfires, rest and reflection. Daily worship highlighting the religious theme of the day is planned and led by the campers.

This summer’s program theme is Handle With Care. Based on curriculum from the National Council of Churches, each day unwraps a dimension of our relationship with the earth and God. Our faith, our God and our world are relationship oriented. So too is summer camp! This year’s camps will explore what relationship looks and feels like through focusing on creation. Daily themes, stewardship, simplicity, the web of life, conservation, and eco-justice connect with practicing trust, making choices, valuing life, honoring relationships and loving God.
