CCC News and Opportunities
Accessibility in the Sanctuary To further create accessibility in the Sanctuary, the first pews in the front on each side are now reserved for accessible seating.
Planned Giving workshop Come one, come all to “Creating a Legacy: Footprints into the Future,” a planned giving workshop on next Sunday, May 2, from 11:45am to 1:30pm in the Conference Room. All are welcome to participate in the world premiere of an interactive play in three-part harmony with our own Pete Hotchkiss as “the Financial Planning Guru” and Dave Ackerman/Karen O’Steen as “Mr. & Mrs. Klueless.” This is for everyone – no matter what your age or financial situation. Rather, it is designed to help each participant think through what sort of legacy each would like to leave and how to accomplish that – for your children, your church, or other causes in which you believe. Sign up outside the church office to secure your seat at what will be an informative and enjoyable session! Bring a bag lunch; the CCC Planned Giving Committee will provide drinks, chips and dessert.
Social Witness: Together We Grow
Reaffirmation of CCC's Just Peace Covenant Beginning next Sunday, May 2,
and continuing on May 16 and June 20, the congregation's attention will again be drawn to one of our Mission Covenants, this time to the CCC Just Peace Covenant. These Sundays will focus in turn on food production and distribution as elements of environmental and social justice, on the Israeli/Palestinian conflict, and on the work of the Gandhi Brigade in helping young adults in Silver Spring address the needs of their communities through creative media. Each of these issues will be grounded in the Just Peace Covenant which in turn is based upon our understandings of the covenantal relationship we enjoy with God and of our responsibilities to live out that covenant as individuals and as a community.
Screening of the movie FRESH - After the 10:30am service on May 2nd, the Board for Social Witness and Stewards of the Earth will be showing a segment of the movie FRESH (about 30 minutes worth) with a brief discussion afterward. This movie provides a really eye-opening picture of how the food we eat is produced, as well as a look at some examples of alternative sustainable farming methods that can get us away from the need for herbicides, pesticides, and antibiotics in our food. Unlike similar documentaries, this movie will leave you feeling inspired, hopeful and empowered to make a difference. The board will also sponsor the distribution of vegetable seedlings which we hope will be taken home, planted, harvested, and shared with local food pantries and soup kitchens.
Update on Senior Minister Search Committee
“For I know the plans I have for you," declares the LORD, "plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future.” (Jeremiah, 29:11)
It has been a while since we have provided an update on the search process. Christ Congregational Church has been blessed with more than 70 candidates expressing an interest in the senior minister position. Reading and discussing their profiles, conducting the numerous telephone interviews, and making site visits has been an enriching spiritual journey of discernment. Recently, two of the strongest candidates withdrew for reasons independent of CCC and the search process. The search committee is continuing its discernment of additional strong candidates. Although the timeframe is uncertain, we are heartened and inspired by the candidates who show an interest in CCC. The committee greatly appreciates the prayers, thoughts and support that you have offered so generously throughout this process.

ALERT! ALERT! COMMUNITY VISION FUNDING IN JEOPARDY!
Members and friends of CCC are asked to contact members of the Montgomery County Council’s Health and Human Services Committee to call for continued funding of Community Vision.
Two weeks ago, the Gazette ran a front page article on the uncertain future of Silver Spring Community Vision, the service center for the homeless housed at Progress Place in downtown Silver Spring along with Shepherd’s Table. Community Vision, the only homeless center south of the Beltway, provides, inter alia, referrals for housing and social services, counseling, vocational and computer training sessions, and case management.
Community Vision is in large part a child of Christ Congregational Church. It was founded back in the early 1990’s to meet needs identified by a cross-section of Silver Spring merchants, community leaders and others contacted by CCC’s then-senior pastor, Jim Todhunter, while on his first sabbatical. Several CCC members helped form Community Vision as an independent organization which later merged with Community Ministry of Montgomery County, now InterFaith Works.
Approximately five eights of Community Vision’s present budget comes via a contract with Montgomery County. The budget now before the County Council for the next fiscal year would cut this Community Vision budget by two-thirds, so much that InterFaith Works would find it necessary to close the program down completely. Many individuals would then lose the only source of mental health, temporary housing and other services that they know, putting them back on the streets without support.
In light of CCC’s history with Community Vision, members and others are urged to contact members of the County Council’s Health and Human Services Committee, to call for continued, sufficient funding of Community Vision. The Health and Human Services Committee may address the Community Vision budget issue as early as tomorrow, April 26. The first person to contact would be George Levanthal, chair of the Health and Human Services Committee, who can be reached at (240) 777-7811 or at councilmember.leventhal@montgomerycountymd.gov. Two other important council members to reach are Nancy Navarro at (240) 777-7968 or councilmember.navarro@montgomerycountymd.gov and Duchy Trachtenberg at (240) 777-7964k or councilmember.trachtenberg@montgomerycountymd.gov, both of whom are also members of the HHS Committee. Further, members are urged to contact Marc Erlich at (240) 777-7966 or councilmember.erlich@montgomerycountymd.gov and Valerie Ervin at (240) 777-7960 or councilmember.ervin@montgomerycountymd.gov, both of whom are members of the Council from the downcounty area. In all cases, please mention any personal contact you have had with clients of Community Vision. Perhaps you have volunteered at Shepherd’s Table (many individuals receive services from both organizations), or have worked at the clothes closet at Progress Place, etc. Such personal stories can make an impression upon Council members facing many budget-related demands. |
