TWENTY-FOURTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME
September 17, 2006

SERVICE OF WORSHIP
10:30 A.M.

We gather for worship.  During the week we have each sought to respond to Christ’s call in our lives.  Let us now enter fully into the Holy One’s presence, the ultimate source of power, nourishment and meaning for us.  We begin doing this by hearing news of the people, life and events of our faith community, and greeting one another.

*THE PASSING OF THE PEACE OF CHRIST
The Passing of the Peace is more than a simple greeting.  It is an affirmation that the
sacred in each of us connects with the sacred in others.  Worshippers are invited to
greet one another with the words “The Peace of Christ be with you” and in response
“And with your Spirit.” (Or you may substitute words that speak from your heart.)

PRELUDE                                            Be Thou My Vision                                          Healey Willan

PRAISE

CALL TO WORSHIP
Jesus set out with his disciples for the villages. On the way he asked this question,
Who do people say that I am?
Elijah.  John the Baptist.  One of the prophets.
Who do you say that I am?
You are the Messiah.
We gather this morning to ponder who you are, Jesus, and who you call us to be.
Let us be together in worship.

PRAYER OF INVOCATION   (Psalm 19:1-4a)
The heavens proclaim your glory, God, and the sky shows forth the work of your hands.  Day unto day takes up the story and night unto night makes known the message.  No speech, no word, no voice is heard, yet your message fills the world.
Amen!

*HYMN OF PRAISE                            Canticle of the Sun                                       Marty Haugen
                                                                (see bulleting insert)

CONFESSION
As we look around us within our own hearts, we discover brokenness, pain and
aimlessness.  Our world and ourselves are in need of healing.

CALL TO CONFESSION

PRAYER OF CORPORATE CONFESSION
God, embodied in Jesus Christ, when we do not follow your ways,
Forgive us, God, and bring us back to you.
When we are afraid of what it might cost us if we really opened ourselves to you,
Forgive us, God and bring us back to you.
When we allow self-concern to rule all other concerns,
Forgive us, God and bring us back to you.
Guide us, O God, and help us follow Jesus and your Holy Wisdom with all our hearts.
Amen.

ASSURANCE OF FORGIVENESS
Beloved friends, wisdom lights the path before us and waits with eager longing to make us friends of God. Therefore, let us rejoice.
We are cherished. We are forgiven. May it be so!

THE WORD
God has come to bring us new life.

SCRIPTURE
                        James 3:1-12
                        Mark 8:27-38

healing and reconciliation.

PRESENTATION OF TITHES AND OFFERINGS

OFFERTORY                         When I Survey the Wondrous Cross                      arr. Gilbert Martin
                                                               The Chancel Choir

When I survey the wondrous cross on which the Prince of glory died,
My richest gain I count but loss, and pour contempt on all my pride.
Forbid it, Lord, that I should boast, that I should boast, save in the death of Christ, my God!
All the vain things that charm me most, I sacrifice them to his blood.

See, from his head, his hands, his feet, sorrow and love flow mingled down!
Did e’er such love and sorrow meet, or thorns compose so rich a crown?
Were the whole realm of nature mine, that were a present far too small;
Love, so amazing, so divine, demands my soul, my life, my all!

*DOXOLOGY # 448 (verse 3)     Take My Life, God, Let It Be                                            Vienna
Take my will; your will be done. Make your will and mine be one.
Take my heart, and by your grace make of it your dwelling place

*PRAYER OF DEDICATION
God, hold us and prod us.  Turn us toward your will.  May these gifts grow into action, for you are speaking, still.  Amen

PASTORAL PRAYER
            The Lord be with you.
            And also with you.
            Lift up your hearts.
We lift them unto the Lord.
            Let us pray.

THE LORD’S PRAYER (The Kadish from the Talmud translated by Christian scholar, Rev. John Gregorie)
Our Parent which art in heaven, be gracious to us, O Lord, Our God;
Hallowed be thy name, and let the remembrance of thee be glorified in heaven above and in the earth below. Let thy kingdom reign over us now and forever. The holy people of old said, Remit and forgive unto all, whatsoever they have done against me. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from the evil thing. For thine is the kingdom and thou shalt reign in glory for ever and for evermore.

TRADITIONAL LORD’S PRAYER (using “Debts” and “Debtors”)

COMING EVENTS

NEIGHBORS IN NEED OFFERING   CCC is a “Five for Five” congregation.  This means that we support Our Church’s Wider Mission (“OCWM”) and all four of the national UCC church offerings.  The Neighbors in Need Offering is coming up on October 1.  The national UCC devotes a third of this offering to support of American Indian congregations and ministries, and two thirds to justice advocacy and direct service projects, including projects that address poverty, social justice, environmental concerns, emergency needs and public policy advocacy.  Watch for more details.

SHOWING OF “AN INCONVENIENT TRUTH”   This is an eye-opening video featuring Al Gore’s compelling presentation on the very real and imminent global warming crisis.  It will be shown in CCC’s sanctuary on Friday, October 6 at 7:00 PM.  This film, which is currently showing in local theatres, will be free.  One or more environmental experts will be available to answer questions from the audience after the video, and refreshments will follow the presentation.  This event is being sponsored by CCC’s Stewards of the Earth and is made possible by the generosity of Greater Washington Interfaith Power and Light, of which CCC is a member.  CCC is one of 130 local and 4000 national faith groups that are showing the video as part of a Spotlight on Global Warming.  The public is invited.

BOOK GROUP   The CCC Book Group is reading 1776 by David McCullough.  We will discuss this book on Oct. 15, 7:00 PM, at the home of Mary Stone.  All are welcome.

NA REQUESTS THANKSGIVING SUPPORT   Narcotics Anonymous has asked CCC to open its doors on Thanksgiving Day from 10 AM to 9 PM.  Twelve volunteers are needed in 1-hour shifts to staff the building, give directions and generally support the event.  Having a place to go on a family holiday is an important source of strength and renewal for folks in self-help groups.  What little training is needed can be “on-the-job” from one volunteer to the next.  Contact Dianne Abraham at 301-585-8010, ext. 222 or at Dianne@christ-ucc.org to volunteer or for more information.

AUDIO/VISUAL BALCONY CONSTRUCTION PROJECT   The Audio/Visual Committee is building a raised in the back center of the balcony to house the sanctuary sound system.  Carpenters, painters and helpers are needed on Saturdays in September.  Please sign up on the bulletin board outside the office.

FROM STEWARDS OF THE EARTH
“Paper or plastic?”  How do you answer when you hear that question?  For something that's often in our lives for fewer than 5 minutes, shopping bags create tremendous waste.  Next time you shop, BYOB (bring your own bag).  Why?
-- Save oil and/or trees.  In the US, about 12 million barrels of oil and 14 million trees go to producing plastic and paper bags each year.
-- Reusing makes cents.  Giant offers a 3-penny discount if you bring your own.
-- Be a role model. Other shoppers will watch and learn.   www.idealbite.com

SOCIAL WITNESS CONCERNS

The UCC’s Justice and Witness Ministries Supports Showings of The Ground Truth  On September 15, The Ground Truth, a film portrait of the realities faced by Iraq war veterans, opened in theaters nationwide.  JWM has formed a partnership with Focus Features, the studio that produced this film, to encourage churches to promote seeing the film.  The Rev. John F. Gundlach, UCC Minister for Government Chaplaincies and a retired Navy captain, said: “I found this [film] to be an accurate representation of military recruiting and training practices and an honest portrayal of the lasting effects of combat on those who have experienced it.  The Ground Truth in no way dishonors service members or veterans.  To the contrary, it lifts up the true nature of their service and sacrifices in a way that we rarely, if ever, see in the popular media.”
