For three days this week, the Institute for Defense and Government Advancement will be holding Firepower 2006 at the Hilton Hotel in Silver Spring. This conference represents the co-operative efforts of the military, the US government, and the arms industry to adapt to the new “Global War on Terror.” New “operational and industry advancements” in weaponry will be showcased. QI GONG Classes in this gentle, meditative form of exercise meet on Thursday mornings at 10:00 AM in the Meeting Room (108). The cost is $10 per session. NEXT SUNDAY – OCTOBER 1 NEIGHBORS IN NEED OFFERING The US Census Bureau recently released poverty data telling us that 37 million people – one of every twelve residents – are living hand to mouth in this country. This is indeed a shocking statistic. A significant portion of the Neighbors in Need grants to churches and social justice partners are made to address issues of hunger and poverty. Your thoughtful contributions on Sunday, October 1, to the NIN offering, pooled with similar gifts from other UCC churches, can help address poverty directly and influence policy choices our government makes. FIRST SUNDAY POTLUCK LUNCH Join us on Sunday October 1 in the Social Hall following the 10:30 worship service for a potluck lunch sponsored by the Board for Church Life. COMING EVENTS SUNDAY MORNING CHURCH SCHOOL OPPORTUNITIES Church school has gotten off to a great start for the year. The CE Board is encouraging teachers to commit to team teaching for one quarter in order to provide better continuity for the children. A team of three teachers rotates throughout the quarter with two teachers in the classroom each week. We are still in need of volunteers for the fall quarter, especially in the 4th and 5th grade class. Please let Susan Gray or Kathie McConnell know if you are interested. If you are unable to teach in the fall, please consider the winter or spring quarters. Due to the inability to recruit a teacher for middle school, that class will not be meeting on Sunday mornings. Middle schoolers will still take part in the youth program on Sunday evenings. SHOWING OF “AN INCONVENIENT TRUTH” This is an eye-opening video featuring Al Gore’s compelling presentation on the very real and imminent global warming crisis. It will be shown in CCC’s sanctuary on Friday, October 6 at 7:00 PM. This film, which is currently showing in local theatres, will be free. One or more environmental experts will be available to answer questions from the audience after the video, and refreshments will follow the presentation. This event is being sponsored by CCC’s Stewards of the Earth and is made possible by the generosity of Greater Washington Interfaith Power and Light, of which CCC is a member. CCC is one of 130 local and 4000 national faith groups that are showing the video as part of a Spotlight on Global Warming. The public is invited. BOOK GROUP The CCC Book Group is reading 1776 by David McCullough. We will discuss this book on Oct. 15, 7:00 PM, at the home of Mary Stone. All are welcome. NA REQUESTS THANKSGIVING SUPPORT Narcotics Anonymous has asked CCC to open its doors on Thanksgiving Day from 10 AM to 9 PM. Hosting the event is dependent on our ability to staff the day. Twelve volunteers are needed in 1-hour shifts to staff the building, give directions and generally support the event. At this time we still need nine volunteers. Having a place to go on a family holiday is an important source of strength and renewal for folks in self-help groups. What little training is needed can be “on-the-job” from one volunteer to the next. We need to let the NA Coordinator know by the end of September whether or not we have enough volunteers to host the event. Contact Dianne Abraham at 301-585-8010, ext. 222 or at Dianne@christ-ucc.org to volunteer or for more information. ANNUAL TREASURER’S REPORT Copies of the Annual Treasurer’s Report for the 2005-2006 year are available in the church office. MUSIC MINISTRY WITH OUR CHILDREN The Chapel Choir, for children in grades 4, 5 and 6, has begun rehearsals under the direction of Natalie Foster. Natalie comes with a high degree of energy, enthusiasm and professional expertise and ability, and we appreciate her time and talents in directing this choir. It is wonderful to have the younger ones in our community learning how to celebrate their gifts of music in worship here at CCC. The Chapel Choir meets on Sunday mornings from 9:45 AM until 10:15 AM in room 010, on the lower level of the preschool buiding. Rehearsal CD's are available for the choir members to hear what they will be singing throughout the year and to assist with rehearsal. All children in grades 4-6 are welcome and encouraged to join us. For questions or for more information contact Nae Pearson, Director of Music, at 301-585-8010 or by e-mail at Holymusic@aol.com. FROM STEWARDS OF THE EARTH SOCIAL WITNESS CONCERNS UCC President Says Jews And Christians Are “Inextricably Linked.” On Sept. 19, in a major speech at the fall convocation of United Theological Seminary in Minneapolis, the Rev. John H. Thomas, General Minister and President of the UCC, stressed the importance of Christian-Jewish relations despite criticism of recent General Synod actions regarding the Israel occupation of the West Bank and the security wall. “Jews and Christians, remain, even in moments of deepest tension, inextricably linked to one another by the God whose covenants with each community have not been and cannot be broken.” Recalling an earlier, 1987 General Synod position, Rev. Thomas also stated: “Judaism has not been superseded by Christianity. Christianity is not to be understood as the successor religion to Judaism. God’s covenant with the Jewish people has not been abrogated.” Regarding the present Middle East situation, Rev. Thomas explained that UCC policy looks for there to be “[t]wo viable states with secure and internationally recognized borders. Two people living if not in harmony, at least at peace and with dignity. Two national and three religions sharing a capital that is sacred to each. This remains the only viable future for the children of Israel and Palestine, the only way these children will be able to live.” To read the full speech entitled “From Time to Time a New Shipment of History Arrives,” see the Social Witness bulletin board outside the CCC sanctuary, or go to www.ucc.org/news/jthomas_thechurch.pdf.* * * * * * * * * * * * * * * CALENDAR FOR THE WEEK Sunday, September 24 – Twenty-Fifth Sunday in Ordinary Time * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * |
