"MIRROR MIRROR, ON THE WALL"

Matthew 2: 1-7

"Mirror, mirror on the wall, whose the greatest of them all?" asked the king, quite taken with himself.

"You are, my lord. You are the greatest king of them all."

"Ah, thank you mirror. You are right."

Every day the king would look into the mirror and ask his question. Every day he would leave satisfied with the answer, until one day, the king asked,

"Mirror, mirror on the wall, who’s the greatest of them all?" And the mirror replied,

"A child is born and he is the king of the Jews. He is the greatest of them all."

"What do you mean?! Blasphemy! How dare you talk to me, King Herod, like this? I will have you broken into a million little pieces."

But Herod could not get this new revelation out of his mind. Someone greater than he was alive, in his country, somewhere. He called together the wisest teachers and Jerusalem officials. "Where is this child, this Messiah?"

"In the town of Bethlehem in Judea," they answered. "For this is what the prophet Micah wrote:

Bethlehem in the land of Judah, you are by no means the least of the leading cities of Judah; for from you will come a leader who will guide my people Israel.

King Herod had to do something. What? Then he remembered. There had been talk of some visiting astrologers that had seen a certain star in the east. It seemed to be a special sign about the baby king. He called them into a secret meeting. They talked. All the while, Herod was thinking of ways to kill this new baby king because Herod, not Jesus was the greatest of them all.

Herod sent the visitors to Bethlehem with these instructions:

"Go and make a careful search for the child; and when you find him, let me know so that I too may go and worship him."

Amen
