Four Corners SHARP at Montgomery Blair
Christ Congregational Church is a member of a coalition of churches
and other organizations in the Silver Spring community that sponsors and
supports the Student Help and Academic Resource Program. The program is
centered at Marvin Memorial United Methodist Church and serves students
Monday through Thursday of the school term, from 7:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m.
The students are pre-qualified for the program by the school. This
environment enables students to keep up with school assignments while
under suspension.
A paid director supervises the students, while volunteers
provide mentoring and assistance to the students towards the completion of
their tasks. In addition to the objective of maintaining classroom work
while under suspension, students are helped to accept responsibility for
the action that led to suspension and to develop strategies for avoiding
suspension in the future. A pool of volunteers who can help for 4 to 6
hours minimum per month is needed for this worthwhile project. If
interested, contact the Board for Social Witness, or the Program Director
at (301) 592-0500.
Time: 4-6 hours per month

"Progress Place" in downtown Silver Spring. Volunteers set the

the second Wednesday of each month. Volunteers also sort and distribute
clothes during the day.
Time: one 2-hour shift a month; weekly clothes sorting and
distribution
Silver Spring Community Vision
Community Vision has fostered the development of and
generated widespread community support for "Progress Place," a
multi-service day center that provides a variety of social and health
services and empowerment opportunities for the homeless. Volunteers
provide numerous services such as literacy training, mentoring and
counseling.
