An Architect's View of Europe - - 1928- 1930

by Richard F. Voell

From October of 1928 through 1930 Mr. Richard F Voell traveled through Europe recording architectural forms on paper as pencil sketches, watercolors and lithographs. In the summer of 1928 he competed with 22 other top architectural graduates from mid-western colleges for the Reyerson Traveling Fellowship. His sketches of Chicago area estates and gardens won him the traveling fellowship for study abroad. One of his wining pencil sketches is in the show: "Estate of David Adler, Libertyville, Illinois".

Unfortunately, work, golf and family took up Mr. Voell's time during his working years. The only artwork he did was to design an occasional Christmas card and paint Aesop's fables on Easter eggs for Vicki. When he retired to Hawaii, he was encouraged to take up painting again but declined. He enjoyed his palette of yellow ochre, cerulean blue and burnt sienna that are so prevalent in his European watercolors. He didn't feel the Hawaiian landscape lent itself to using that palette.

1930s

Vicki Voell Taylor, his daughter, proudly presents these works of art for your enjoyment. Other works of Mr. Voell's have been shown previously at this church. These particular works, however, are his favorite ones and have not been previously shown as they hung in his homes in Washington, DC and Hawaii.
