Art Show for January - March 2007
Photography by Nathan Rolls

From an early age, I have always had a camera in my hands.  Up until high school, I had never had the opportunity to develop and print my own pictures.  In the two years I took a black & white film development course, I not only learned how much work and effort it demands to photograph with a 35 millimeter camera and then develop the shots myself in a dark room, but I gained respect for the artistic possibilities of the medium of photography.  I also had the chance at that time to work with photographer Bill Carnahan, my mentor for the Covenant Class here at CCC, who invited me to help develop the covenant class photos which he had taken.

In the last year, I purchased my first real SLR digital camera (Canon Rebel XT).  I decided to start shooting with a digital to save money.  Not only do I save money on film and processing fees, but I can edit and print photos of my choosing.  Though most of the photos in my showing were shot with this camera, I still use my 35mm film camera just as much.  Digital cameras will never offer the same sensation or satisfaction of creating and producing your own photographs.

I have always had a fascination with the natural world.  Respecting and supporting the environment has been an integral part of my education at school, home, and at the church.  All of my teachers have encouraged my interest in the physical environment throughout my life.  I plan to further my studies in college next year as an Environmental Studies major.

As you can see, I have chosen a select group of pictures that I believe show that my fascination with wildlife integrates into my life-long hobby of taking photographs.  This year, I am taking an AP Art course with Patricia Kessler at The Barrie School.  I am working on digitally manipulating and editing my pictures.  I have received more than enough support from my teacher to help further my work in the upcoming years.  Ultimately, I hope that my photographic work can inspire others to look at these wild faces and love them as much I do.
