History of Silver Spring Child Care Center
SSCCC was founded in 1971 as an independent activity by several members
of Christ Congregational Church (CCC). They felt there was a real need
for high quality, affordable child care in the local community, available to all families regardless of their economic situation. Since
CCC did not have adequate facilities for classrooms and a playground the
group approached other churches in the area. SSCCC opened on October
25, 1971 at Memorial United Methodist Church on Colesville Road with 17
children and sev en staff members. Two of the teachers continue to be
on staff since opening day !
SSCCC opened on faith with a fund of $2,000 collected form devoted
contributors and a $1,500 interest free loan which was paid in full in
six months. In a few short months enrollment reached 40, requiring a
need for more staff. To meet the adult/child ratio, two volunteers came
in daily. By the beginning of the second year, the Center was licensed
for fifty children.
Through the years, creative and nurturing staff members have maintained
a family-like and loving environment to allow each child to develop
self-confidence and a love for learning.
