UCC Joins Statement in Response to UN Session on HIV/AIDS On June 7, six US Christian denominations, including the UCC through Justice and Witness Ministries and Wider Church Ministries, issued a statement that called upon US policy makers to step up the world-wide fight against AIDS. This followed a three day debate at the UN that assessed progress made since 2001 on AIDS treatment and prevention and formulated plans through 2010. The statement by the six organizations expressed disappointment with the statement issued after the UN meeting, and stated their intentions to intensify "advocacy for US policies that address this great crisis in the most robust way." The group called upon the US Government to increase contributions to the Global Fund, to add new countries to the President’s Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief, to remove restrictions on HIV/AIDS funding that hinder prevention, to comply with the law that requires at least 10% of US global HIV/AIDS funding to go to orphans and vulnerable children, and to invest in health systems in economically impoverished countries. See the full statement on the BSW bulletin board.

News from the Welcome Retreat Memorial Day Weekend 2006

Warm sunshine, fresh air, children and adults laughing, camp fires crackling, guitars strumming, voices singing, refreshing river water, delicious smells of food cooking, all were among the senses experienced at the CCC Welcome Retreat held on Memorial Day weekend in Yellow Spring, WV. Approximately 67 members and friends of CCC, of all ages, either stayed a night (or two) or visited for a day.  Some even slept under the stars. During the weekend, we hiked the Retreat House grounds, climbed Fossil Mountain, played lively games of volley ball and softball, made crafts, shared stories and jokes, played in the creek and river, sang around the camp fire, ate s’mores, enjoyed community meals together, sat lazily on the porch and participated in a worship service led by Rev. Sandy Dodson.  Several attendees commented on how nice it was to get away and wind down from the hurried lives at home, to be able to enjoy the out of doors, meet and visit with folks over a more extended period of time than fellowship time allows on Sunday morning, and to enjoy the Retreat House with multiple generations.  Special thanks to Phil Fox for sharing his musical talents, Bruce Strand for leading the bird house building project, and Cory Gray for his endless energy with the children and for projects around the Retreat House.
Hope to see you next year in the hills of West Virginia!
Trish Esposito, For the Board of Outreach and Engagement

SILENT AUCTION – SATURDAY, NOVEMBER 11, 2006

The Seniors of CCC are planning a Silent Auction with bidding that will end during a final evening event on Saturday, November 11th. The focus of the effort is to raise monies for the building fund to be used either to pay down debt or as a reserve for roof repairs that Trustees have indicated will be necessary in the next few years. We are asking all members of CCC to consider how they can support this venture by providing services or items to be included in the auction. A busy team of helpers will approach individuals to find creative ways to help in the project. Please be generous with your time and resources to make this a very successful event.

We will be keeping you advised as plans progress to make this a very special fun event. If you have questions or suggestions to help please contact either Neville & Audrey Platt (301) 879 9772 (nevaudpl@aol.com) or Sarah Anders (301) 424 3339 (sarahanders@atlantech.net).
