CCC NewsNotes A Just Peace & Open and Affirming Church
The Day I (Almost) Met John Kenneth Galbraith Back in the early 1980s the nuclear freeze movement was gaining momentum in Vermont. The goal was to enact a bi-lateral freeze on the production of all new nuclear weapons by the U.S. and the U.S.S.R. The strategy was to win support, town by town, by placing a freeze resolution on the agenda of each yearly town meeting. The town of Norwich, where I served as a UCC pastor, had taken the lead in this statewide effort. One chilly May morning I found myself carrying a placard at a rally in the state capitol, Montpelier. My sign read: "Norwich Supports the Nuclear Freeze." The featured speaker was John Kenneth Galbraith, who often summered in Vermont. Economist, advisor to presidents, liberal, activist, iconoclast and wit – Galbraith was clearly sympathetic with our movement. His speech, however, was meager on the soaring rhetoric and concluded with the words, "No matter how great your dream and your moral integrity are, they don’t amount to a hill of beans unless you do something about it!" That was a bit of a jolt, because we all thought we were doing something about it. As the rally wound down, Galbraith, who was standing about thirty feet away from me, caught me eye and started walking briskly toward me. I was thrilled. I had no clue what was on his mind, but couldn’t wait to find out. Had he mistaken me for someone else? Was he going to offer a word of encouragement? Rebuke? Had he confused Norwich with Norwich University (formerly a military academy)? Had he looked deep and fondly into my righteous, well-meaning soul? I never found out, because when he was within fifteen feet of me, someone came up and caught him by the arm. The two were quickly engaged in conversation and moments later strolled away together. What had that been about? Galbraith’s recent death at age 97 brought all that back to me - one of life’s tiny mysteries that will forever remain unsolved. What stays with me though, are his words to the gathering that day. Our best intentions "won’t amount to a hill of beans unless you do something about it!" I’ll settle for that. CrossWalk America On Easter Sunday, a group of moderate and progressive Christians started a 2,500 walk from Phoenix to Washington, DC "to promote Christianity’s ‘core values’ . . ." Six ministers and lay persons from the UCC, the United Methodist Church and Metropolitan Community Church will walk for more than four months through twelve states, including Ohio, West Virginia, Pennsylvania, and Maryland, and will arrive in DC on Labor Day weekend. Others will be invited to join in for portions of the trip. Approximately 55 congregations along the way, representing the five mainline Protestant denominations, plus the American Baptists, the Universalist Unitarians, and the Disciples of Christ, will provide hospitality and speaking venues. The walk will evoke the three-year ministry of Jesus as he traveled throughout Galilee. According to the group’s co-president, the Rev. Eric Elnes of Scottsdale, the "Crosswalkers" are seeking to reclaim "a different voice for Christianity in America." They will attempt "to refocus the nation’s attention on the core values of the Christian faith by spreading the message that Christianity is first and foremost about the just and unconditional love of God for all people and Christ’s commandments to love God and to love our neighbors as we love ourselves." The Rev. Rebecca Glenn, co-president, has stated: "There is a silent majority of people who believe Christianity is a path of compassion, acceptance, and reaching out to those in need. At a time when there is so much pain caused by religious polarization, many would like to see a renewed focus on love, and that is what this walk and the CrossWalk America organization are all about." The UCC’s Stillspeaking Campaign and the UCC-affiliated Pacific
School of Religion are important partners in this endeavor. Others
include the Human Rights Campaign, Living the Questions, Protestants for
the Common Good, No Longer Silent, Clergy for Justice, Faith in America,
and the Beatitudes Society. Gordon Forbes and Bob Robey have agreed to lead a brainstorming
session on how seniors at CCC might explore this topic. If you
would like to brainstorm with us, please contact Sarah Anders
(301.424.3339 or
sarahanders@atlantech.net). I will set up a meeting time that is
convenient for everyone interested in this preliminary meeting. If
you’d rather not attend the meeting but you have an idea or two, please
let me know and I will pass along your thoughts. Many thanks,
Sarah
