of Installation will be held The Board of
Deacons and Referral and Service Help Welcome Missionary Couple – Oct. 25, 6:30-9:00 pm. On Oct. 25, CCC, through the Board for Social Witness, will host Bob and Dee Keller who are on home leave from their assignment in Istanbul, Turkey. There they serve as interim executive liaisons to the Health and Education Foundation. The Kellers’ work involves providing consultant services on the management of three former mission high schools and other former mission institutions. They have also been involved in ecumenical community service projects with refugees, prayer groups, survivors of the 1999 earthquakes, women’s work, etc. The Kellers have been involved in mission work in Turkey for over 50 years and have been working for Global Ministries, UCC/Disciples of Christ, for the past four years. They will talk about their experiences working with Muslims and about Islam, and will emphasize Turkey’s significance as a secular country with a Muslim population. Their home church is the Manchester Church of the Brethern, Manchester, Indiana. Everyone is invited to come at 6:30 pm to meet the Kellers, for dinner at 7:00, and a presentation around 7:30. We do ask that you sign up on the main bulletin board outside the church office so we can know how many to expect. We also expect visitors from the Potomac Association and from Howard University. Board for Social Witness Grounds – Thanks to Mary Pence, Martha Krieger and Dick Meyer for weeding on the first Saturdays of Sept. and Oct. Regular monthly weeding is paying off – we have started working our way around from the chiller to the Brewster side of the church. Every month we get a little farther around the building, keeping plant beds neat and trim. Bridgette Dougall continues to create beauty on the Indian Spring side, where she has adopted the area extending from the chiller to the front steps. Cub Scout Pack 275 will be planting daffodils and crocus in the areas near the front entrance this fall as their service project for the Church. Alex Dencker, a manager at Behnke Nursery and husband of member, Leigh Dencker, is advising the pack on this project. Web Calendar – Take a look at the CCC web site – www.christ-ucc.org – and click on the calendar. Don Collins of the Technology Committee looked at web-based calendars that could link to our web site, and recommended MyChurchEvents.com, to which we subscribe. Elaine Wunderlich created the links. The calendar is for CCC events exclusively, and we hope members and visitors will find it a useful tool for learning more about the church and its mission and programs. Lobby – In an effort to improve both access and visibility for materials in the lobby, especially on Sunday mornings, we made two improvements this week. On the wall next to the elevator, Dick Meyer hung the bulletin board on which Jean Caswell creates a display for each week’s lectionary. O&E purchased a revolving kiosk which is at the end of the pew. The kiosk will contain information about CCC’s programs, mission and governance. Anne Weissenborn, Prophetic Justice Principles for America. The National Council of Churches’ "Let Justice Roll" campaign is urging consideration of the following ten questions about any proposed public policy. The questions have been formulated by the Rev. Dr. James A. Forbes, Jr., Senior Minister, Riverside Church, NYC. These questions "test public policy against the principles of righteousness and justice in our society."
Mt. Olive Pickle Boycott Ends – Update. Edie Rasell, former CCC member and presently the UCC’s Minister for Labor Relations and Community Economic Development, has posted a detailed outline of the provisions of the agreement ending the five-year boycott of the Mt. Olive Pickle Company. She ends her message with the following: "So please, go buy some Mount Olive pickles, and thank you for all you did as a boycott supporter to make the boycott a success." Edie’s message is posted on the BSW bulletin board outside the CCC sanctuary. The CCC Book Group will next meet on October 24th, 7 p.m., at the home of Marilyn Meyer. We will discuss The Patron Saint of Liars, a novel by Ann Patchett. All are welcome. Collecting Snider’s Food Receipts Please continue to collect your Snider’s receipts for me. I’ll need all of your receipts dated in 2004 by the middle of January. Bethesda-Chevy Chase High School thanks you for your support of this fundraiser. -Sam Brush CCC Display Board, Banner and Balloons Available In preparation for participation in the 2004 Takoma Park Folk Festival, the CCC Outreach and Engagement Board put together materials and had a display board, banner and balloons professionally made. These items are available for other CCC members, committees and boards to use. The display board, designed by CCC member Gwen Glesman, uses photographs and written word to provide general information about our worship services, activities and programs. Brochures outlining the specifics of programs are available in the church office. The banner, designed by CCC member Judy Cox, reflects the church building graphic, as well as "Christ Congregational Church, United Church of Christ, Silver Spring, MD, www.christ-ucc.org". The banner has a pole pocket for carrying during marches and rallies. It also has grommets for attaching it to poles and clips for hanging it in front of a table. A colorful assortment of balloons are imprinted with the same information and graphic as the banner. If desired, you will need to provide your own helium tank. Is your CCC Board, committee or group planning an event or program where the display board, banner or balloons could be used? If so, Contact Trish Esposito, chair of O&E at 301-593-1858, trishespo@yahoo.com, Outreach at the Takoma Park Folk Festival a Success On Sunday September 12 from 10 AM – 6PM members of the CCC Outreach and Engagement Board greeted and distributed CCC literature and balloons to hundreds of persons attending the Takoma Park Folk Festival. Our display board and materials were well received. The balloons, temporary tattoos and face painting were a hit with children and parents. The following Sunday we had at least three families identify themselves as visiting CCC as a result of our outreach at the Takoma Park Folk Festival. Many thanks to O&E and Board members for staffing our booth all day, Pete Boyer for the balloon ordering and logistics, Judy Cox for designing the banner and balloon graphics, Gwen Glesman for display board design, to our ministers, Jim, Julia and Sandy for stopping by and greeting folks, Jim Henkle-Bahn and Winifred Roberts for helping out at the booth, Claudia Curry for painting dozens of children’s faces and Sara Watson for coordinating the entire event. Trish Esposito, chair O&E Board. Amistad Sailing & Ecumenical Worship Service The Central Atlantic Conference is sponsoring a sailing on the Amistad, Saturday, October 30, 2004, from 10:00 AM - 12:00 noon. Freedom Schooner Amistad is owned and operated by AMISTAD America, Inc., a national, non-profit educational organization. For more information on the Amistad and its visit to Baltimore harbor, go to http://www.sailbaltimore.org/04ships.htm. *$25.00 goes to the Amistad, and $25.00 helps defray Conference costs for this visit. There will be a six-session Racial Autobiography class meeting on Sunday evenings from 7:00 to 8:30 beginning October 17 in classroom 208. We will be using the book Understanding Whiteness: Unraveling Racism, Tools for the Journey by Judy Helfand and Laurie Lippin. One month into the busy fall program season, we are very pleased with how smoothly the administrative program at the Church is running. In no small part, we are indebted to our four office volunteers, Bud Dennie, Betty Eakin-Stith, Delilah Marrow, and Anne Weissenborn. All of them now work a regular shift during the week. Their presence enables us to focus on specific areas of our responsibility – for Susan, supporting CE and other programs, and for Jackie, managing the physical facility. In addition, thanks to the volunteers, we have been able to expand support and service to the staff, other volunteers, and boards. In September, we did projects for Outreach & Engagement, Older Adults Programming, and Stewardship, and for the Financial Secretary and Archivist. We are also grateful to our regular NewsNotes team, who prepare issues for mailing: Barbara, Betty and Chet Callendar, Randy Caswell (hurry back, Jean!), and Ruth Haigh. Mable Elliott prepared folders for conversation meetings and she and June Leonard collated an unusually full bulletin one week. Without these volunteers, our job would be much more difficult and a lot less fun! With the help of the volunteers, we are weeding through files, discarding duplicative or outdated materials, and reorganizing the office and workroom to support the staff and programs at CCC. The new business hours, 9 a.m. – 5 p.m., appear to be working well. The night staff comes on duty at 6:30 p.m. unless they are needed earlier for a specific tenant or event. To our knowledge, neither building users nor members have been inconvenienced by the new hours. We continue to welcome feedback and constructive suggestions for improvement as well as projects. Susan and Jackie Saturday, October 23 Make a scarecrow for your home Halloween decorations! You’ll need to bring an old hat and clothes to dress him or her, with long sleeves and pants. Other materials and directions will be provided. Please sign up on the church bulletin board so we’ll know how much straw to provide. If you’ll need help finding a hat, please indicate that on the sign up sheet. At 6:30, join the fun in the Social Hall. We’ll have games, crafts, storytelling, a Haunted House, costume parade and mummy wrap. Refreshments will be served. Adults can wear costumes too! If you’d like to help decorate, bake cookies, or run a game, please call Marian Dirda at 301-589-6412 or e-mail m_dirda@yahoo.com. To all of you who shared your talent with
