Invitation to Called to Care

You are invited to become a CCC Caregiver. CCC Caregivers accept assignments responding to a variety of needs in the lives of church folk - bedside visits in the hospital, support during times of grief or crisis, ongoing friendly visits over longer periods of time, and many other situations. The CCC Called to Care program makes use of training materials produced by the United Church of Christ specifically designed for lay people in a parish. (This will be our second Called to Care group).

Caregivers must complete a two-day training period to be held at CCC, October 11 - 12 (beginning Friday evening and all day and evening on Saturday). The basic training components will include: Entering the Space of Others, Communication and Nurturing, Caregiving Situations, Resources of Faith, and Expectations of Caregivers. The training effectively combines theory, practice, practical situations, theology and bible study, and clarification of expectations and responsibilities. You will be given a resource notebook containing all the essential materials you will need. Assignments will be made according to the needs of the church and your gifts, time and skills.

If you are interested in learning more about "Called to Care" feel free to speak with Jim, Linda or Dale. Registration materials will be available in worship and in the next issue of News Notes.

A Life Journey Workshop for Women — Oct. 26th

When: Saturday, October 26, from 9am to 3pm

Where: CCC Conference Room

Deadline for signing up: October 20th

The Women's Committee invites you to participate in a day-long workshop for women interested in examining the important events in their past and present lives in order to find direction for today. Certified facilitators, Jackie Bahn-Henkelman and Alexsandra Stewart, will work with a small group of women on examining the "heroes within" themselves (the warrior, the lover, the caregiver, the sage) using the archetypal work of Carol Pearson. The cost for the event is $100 per person. Participation is limited to fifteen women. Please sign up on the sheet on the bulletin board outside of the church office by October 20th or call Gretchen Stiers at 301-589-0816.

Life Review Groups

A new Life Review Group will be beginning soon. If you are interested in participating in this rewarding small group experience in which life stories are explored and shared, contact Dale Ostrander. Several CCC members have been participating in the three previous groups which are continuing on this Fall.

Backstage Roles Still Available for Fiddler

Rehearsals are well underway and the music already sounds terrific! Set and lighting designers are hard at work planning the show’s staging. While there will be many opportunities for volunteers during the show, there are some key backstage positions that need filling soon. Needed are Make-up artists – theatre experience preferred – time commitment will be concentrated the week of the show; Publicity Manager – to manage external advertising and promotion, including local press; Property Manager – obtaining props will be a team effort, but someone is needed to manage the inventory and insure props remain in good condition throughout the show. Putting on a musical at CCC is a lot of fun, so if you are a behind-the-scenes team-player interested in any of these positions, contact Jackie Walters, Stage Manager at jjwalters.silverspring@verizon.net or 301-565-3197.

A Day of Renewal, Vision, and Service: Supporting Leadership at CCC Saturday, October 5, 2002, 9 am – 3:30 pm

You are invited to a special day of renewal, re-connection, visioning, and leadership support. On October 5, we will explore new ways to support those who choose to take on leadership in the church. If you are a member of a CCC board or committee, or if you are not but are interested in participating in the life of the church in new ways, come join us!

Like many of us, you may have conflicting images of what leadership is. Leadership might connote lofty images of power and control, or less lofty images of over-commitment and stress. There are also emerging concepts of leadership based on service and stewardship. One of the goals of October 5 is to explore the heart of what leadership and service mean to you in this Christian community.

On October 5 we will: Share our stories and our visions about CCC, service and leadership Explore ways to make our community work more caring, more effective, and more fun Meet as boards and committees to apply these new ideas to our work for this year Share bagels, lunch, and fellowship. If you would like to re-evaluate your ideas of leadership and service, explore the passion and vision that you feel for things that matter to you, and re-connect to the CCC community in a new way, please join us on October 5. We will meet from 9 to 3:30, mixing fun and exploration with focus and action.

Please contact Ruth Avery, 301-585-8010, ruth@christ-ucc.org, by Oct. 2 if you would like to come. We will need a head count by then to plan for food and space. To help cover the cost of lunch, which will be provided, we will accept contributions at the door. If you will need child care, please contact Jackie Walters immediately (301-565-3197) with the number and ages of your children so that appropriate arrangements can be made. We hope to see you on this special and energizing day.

Neighbors in Need: It’s About Justice!

Through the Neighbors in Need offering, the United Church of Christ expresses a common commitment to justice and compassion throughout the United States and Puerto Rico. One-third of the offering supports the work of the Council for American Indian Ministry, including much-needed financial support for twenty American Indian congregations in the UCC. The funds are used to support the work of local churches and their pastors; encourage youth and young adults; support persons preparing for Christian ministry; empower American Indians who are members of non-Indian congregations; and advocate for justice on issues affecting American Indian life.

The remaining two-thirds of the Neighbors in Need funds support justice advocacy and direct service projects, such as the hunger action ministry, just-peace programs, and community grants. Small but essential grants are made throughout the year to congregations and organizations engaged in community organizing, public policy advocacy and direct service. A significant portion of these grants address issues of hunger and poverty. The Neighbors in Need offering will be received on World Communion Sunday, October 6.

Conversation Meeting

There will be a Conversation Meeting between the worship services on October 13. If you would like to learn more about the United Church of Christ or Christ Congregational Church specifically, you are welcome to come to this meeting in the Conference Room to meet with members of the Board of Outreach and Engagement.

On the Horizon at CCC

Put on Your Dancin’ Shoes!

Our own Big Band Tradition is celebrating its return to CCC with a FALL BALL. Come Saturday, October 5, from 8 – 11 p.m. in our newly renovated Social Hall. Donations for the building fund will gratefully be accepted.

CCC Workday October 19, 2002

On October 19, 2002, Christ Congregational Church members will have an opportunity to assist with various projects around our building, both inside and out. On this day we will have volunteers do many things to help make CCC a better place. Because of the type of work we plan to do, only middle school and older children will be allowed to work. Many volunteers are needed to assist in the various projects. The hours of your labor of love and fellowship are from 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. or 9:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m., or 12:00 to 4:00 p.m. Lunch will be served to all volunteers from noon to 1:00 p.m. Sign up sheets are on the bulletin board. Please contact Bud Dennie or Dick Meyer for any additional information.

Building and Grounds Committee

Fall Women’s Retreat

The retreat will take place at the Retreat House on September 27-29. The theme this year is "Falling Leaves." Autumn is both a time of harvest and a time of death, which brings new life. We will focus on identifying and letting go of what keeps us from growing by sharing with others, walking, meditating, worshipping, doing some creative activities, playing and of course, eating well. Please sign up on the sheet on the bulletin board. Next to that sheet you will find an information sheet with directions and answers to all your questions.

Link-Ages Place

Now that the Silver Spring Child Care Center has located in our building, an advisory committee is re-grouping to consider how we might begin to move ahead with this vision of intergenerational connections and opportunities for children and elders. If interested in serving on such a committee, contact Jan Forbes at 301-881-2856 or Dale Ostrander at 301-881-2856.

Supper For Seven (or so)

Supper for Seven (or so) is an opportunity to further build our community within CCC. Whether you are a longtime member or new attendee of CCC, the Board for Church Life hopes you will consider participating in order to forge new friendships and get to know people on a deeper level.

How it works: Interested persons ask to be placed in a group that will have a series of meals together, rotating responsibility among each of the members. Meals can be at each member’s home, or at another mutually agreed-upon location (park, restaurant, etc.). One member/couple is asked to serve as the kick-off host for the first group meal. After that, it’s up to the group to decide when and where. A common arrangement is to aim for one meal each month (usually dinner, but it can be brunch or lunch, too). The host can provide all the food for a particular meal, or each member can bring something -- it’s up to the group. If you have a small or communal dining area, other options are possible -- you can arrange a picnic outside, co-host with another member, or identify a restaurant (perhaps for lunch instead of dinner if cost is a concern). If you’d like to participate, or have questions, contact Sara Watson at saradwatson@aol.com, or at 301-879-7692. Groups will be notified by early October. Please indicate whether you’d like to be in a group that includes children, and whether you’d be willing to be the kick-off host for the first meal.

New name tags are coming!

We will use "conference-style" tags that fit into a plastic holder with a clip (the necklace version is harder to store neatly). We will print name tags for all the people on the church’s mailing list (a very long list) and then ask you to put your tag into the plastic holder when you come to church for the first time, after they are introduced. Ultimately, this will help us determine who might still be on the mailing list but is no longer attending CCC.

Until we build a storage cabinet, the name tags will be kept in boxes in the entryway to the sanctuary. Please get your name tag out of the folder and wear it when you come to church or other events and put it back in the folder when you leave (or you can keep it with you). There will be a sign-up sheet for people who need a new tag or a replacement tag. Some people want tags for their children, while others don’t, so to avoid printing up lots of tags that aren’t used, those who do can request them as well.

The initial tags will have your name (in big type!), a small CCC logo and "Christ Congregational Church" on them. There was some interest in putting on the tag other "conversation-starting" information, such as a board or committee of which you are a member. With a church our size, that is a large task, so we’ll look into that in the future.

Many thanks to David Main for his help in organizing the database. And thanks for your patience as we work out this new feature. If you have any questions, please contact Sara Watson at saradwatson@aol.com.

Appreciation for Susan DeFord

During her tenure as editor of News Notes, Susan DeFord brought news reporting, creativity and spirit to CCC’s newsletter. Susan’s ability to ask probing questions and frame issues in succinct and logical ways were immeasurable assets during the four years CCC embarked on a building renovation and major capital campaign. In News Notes and Keystones, on which she worked closely with Judy Cox, Susan’s skills as an editor enabled an amazing amount of information to get into each issue. Susan generously gave her time to put out a late-summer issue of News Notes and to help the new editor learn the ropes. When you see Susan, be sure to thank her in person for her leadership and commitment to CCC as News Notes editor. Susan – thanks!
