Building Expenditure Cap Approved at Special Congregational Meeting

At a Special Congregational Meeting on October 27, the Board of Trustees moved that the expenditure limit for completing Phase I of the Master Plan be raised by $80,000. Chair of Trustees, Pete Hotchkiss, outlined the two main reasons why project costs exceeded the previously approved limit of $4,750,000. First, excavation for the new entry and the courtyard revealed unforeseen problems with rock and groundwater. The budgeted contingency of 8% of construction costs could have handled one of those issues, but not both when combined with other contingency expenses. Second, the massive interior demolition also revealed unexpected and unforeseen issues that required extensive redesign of some areas, notably the mechanical room. While about $30,000 of additional expenses are in dispute, the Trustees requested the maximum amount the Board believes will be required to meet all of CCC's obligations under existing contracts. Following one question from the floor regarding the $100,000 in state bond funds, the congregation approved the motion. As a result, the new project cap is $4,830,000.

Investment Strategies Seminar
by Dale Ostrander

Retirement Housing, Care and Community Resources

Mark your calendars and plan to attend the third advanced planning seminar in the "Five Seminar" series, on Tuesday, November 12th at 10 a.m. at CCC. The focus will be on the broad range of retirement housing options, care and services available to older adults. We are fortunate to have as our speakers, Steve Gurney, editor of the Guide to Retirement Living, and Stuart Rosenthal, editor of the Senior Beacon. Don't miss this informative presentation and discussion.

The Legal Issues Seminar on October 29th was well attended by CCC members. Attendees learned about avoiding Probate and about the importance of end-of-life care documents. See Dale Ostrander for informative brochures and sample Advance Directive documents (re: Health Care Power of Attorney and Living Will). Several copies of the "Five Wishes" end-of-life care booklets are also on order and will be available.

Big Band Dance a Success

On October 5th, CCC once again hosted a Big Band Dance. The dance was a tremendous success with contributions totaling $550 for the building fund. At least 36 people danced the night away to some fantastic big band music.

The Big Band originally began as a German band following a choir trip in 1972, where the oompah bands were heard in Munich's Hoffbraw House. By the late seventies, it had evolved into a big band, with a large proportion of the group being CCC members. They have included Len Ebel, Dick King, David King, Al Newmann, Bruce Maccaabbee, Pat O'Connor, Jack Hiland, Jean Bohnet Ash, Cathy Petzold Cottom, Betty Jensen, George Stringer, Don Hillary, Betty and Buck Buckeridge. Guest vocalists have included Bill Prindle and Toko Ackerman. Today the CCC-related musicians with the band are Terry Strand, Don Pugsley and three people who have been there since 1972 - Sylvia and Paul Gayer and Chuck O'Connor.

Many thanks to all the people who helped make the night a success: Lu Gundersen for creating the attractive flyer and for newspaper publicity; Bruce and Terry Strand for refreshments; Brittany O'Steen for receiving donations at the door; and Dick Meyer and David Gayer for assisting in the logistics of setting up the hall and the band.

Annual CCC Thanksgiving Food Collection

On Sunday, November 24, the annual Thanksgiving food collection will be held at both services. Please remember to bring a donation of canned or packaged food. The Board of Church Life is sponsoring this with help from the Church School. Contact the Prichard's if you need any information (301-384-7126).

Parents' Night Out

Since the social hall is in use on the third Friday of November (our normal meeting time), the Parents Night Out group will be held on November 22, 6:30 to 10:00 p.m. Please sign up on the bulletin board or contact Glenda Neal (301-622-3948 or gbneal@aol.com) if you plan to attend or if you wish more information about the program.

Advent Wreath Workshop

This year's workshop will be held on Sunday, December 1, following the 11:00 worship service. A light lunch will be served. Bring the family and some greens from your yard, and make a wreath to use at home during the Advent season. There will be a signup sheet on the bulletin board a couple of weeks prior to the event. Contact Leslie Wilson at 301-625-5407 for more information.

Chrismon Workshop

The Chrismon workshop will be Sunday, December 15th, beginning with a lasagna dinner at 5:30 p.m. Chrismons are ornaments that are Christian symbols and monograms. There will be a variety from the very simple "glue and glitter" symbols to the very complicated weave of the beaded or pearl crown. This is the first workshop since 1995, so mark your calendar for this intergenerational event. If you are interested in helping at this workshop or have questions, please contact Glenda Neal (301 622-3948 or gbneal@aol.com) for more information.

Some (More) Thoughts on Two Services

With previous discussions on the merits of two services, consider the following:

Providing ushers, the Hospitality Committee, the Sanctuary Committee, and the services of the Deacons are not expected to present any particular problem, and the Chairmen of the above have been contacted and advised of your discussions.

Initially, discussions about the musical program considered our present adult choir for one of the two services with the junior choir supplemented by soloists and a quartet for the second service. However, the committee felt that with the musical program, as well as with the other parts of the service, there should generally be as little difference as possible between the two services on any one Sunday. With this in mind, it was suggested that increasing membership in our adult choir would provide enough for two groups, one choir for each service. It was brought out that with the present organ the musical program is considerably handicapped. The Director of Music felt that with a new instrument we would be in a much better position to provide an adequate program for two services.

The details for the Religious Education program will be discussed more thoroughly. However, the committee felt enthusiastic about the possibilities for the Church School program with dual services. Scheduling duplicate programs at each hour will shorten the program as presently offered to some groups but should provide a stimulus for parents to share more in the religious education of the children and will permit children to attend regular Church Services with their families as we previously did. Suggestions were made for improvements in some of the classroom space and these will be taken care of by your chairman and the house committee.

The committee discussed what might be necessary to assist the Minister and it was decided that for the present no additional assistance was necessary.

Confused?? The above is excerpted from the "Report of Committee on Duel Services for Meeting of (the) Church Council." June 14, 1950
