Winter Weekend In Pa. Blows In Jan. 18-21

Please join us for a wonderful weekend of fun, winter sports, square dancing and friendship as we return to Camp Soles in Pennsylvania for our annual Winter Weekend. We'll be sharing the camp with the Washington Ethical Society and the Green Acres group, just like last year, and this year we have invited Marvin Memorial members to join us as well. So be sure to set aside the weekend of Jan. 18-21.

Since this is Martin Luther King weekend, you will have the option of a two-night stay (adults $80, youths 6-17, $74) or a three-night stay (adults $127, youths $120). Children 5 and under are free. Registration information is posted on the bulletin board at Marvin Memorial. Please return the registration form and checks (made out to CCC) to the Board for Church Life in the church office, or you may register after church during the coffee hour. Since the date of Winter Weekend is earlier this year than in the past, payment is now due BEFORE CHRISTMAS, BY DEC. 23. Contact Terry Strand or Trish Esposito for further information.

Youth & Young Adults Join 5K Walkathon

Our youth and young adults trekked the 5K Walkathon at the National Mall in D.C. on Nov. 17 to raise awareness and funds to help the homeless as one of their many ministries. Thanks to the generosity of many CCC members and others in the community, $386 was raised and designated for Christmas In April. In addition, because of our youth's participation, another $240 is being donated by the Fannie Mae Foundation for a grand total of $626 in funds. CCC youth and young adults thank all of you for your support in their ministries. All of us at CCC extend a great big Thank You CCC youth and young adults for representing CCC in your ministries, and God's work for those in need in our community.

Two Dates For Offering

CCC's annual Christmas Offering will be received on both Dec. 16 & Dec. 23. The funds will be distributed between the Veterans of the Cross, Community Ministry of Montgomery County and ASSISST. Envelopes will be available in the bulletins.

Veterans of the Cross, together with the UCC Emergency Fund, is a national UCC program. It offers financial assistance to retired and, on occasion, active UCC clergy in need. Community Ministry of Montgomery County is an inter-congregational, grassroots organization based in Rockville that provides direct services to and advocates for needy individuals and families in the entire county. CMMC is a source of emergency food and shelter, rent assistance and an advocate for affordable housing. ASSISST, thanks to scores of volunteers including many from CCC, provides much-needed services to elderly persons in the Silver Spring community, thereby helping them to remain in their own homes. Three CCC members are on the board of directors of ASSISST, and another is the executive director.

Keep The Heat On!

CCC is collecting mittens, gloves, hats and coats for the children of Broad Acres Elementary School in Silver Spring Dec. 2-16. The clothing should be in very good used condition or new. Place the items in large decorated boxes found in the narthex of Marvin Memorial. Thanks!

Micro-Enterprise Effort At Community Ministry

(From Dateline CMMC)

Community Ministry of Montgomery County has started a micro-enterprise business program to assist small business entreprenuers in securing loans and provide them with technical assistance. Warren Rosenfeld, a Montgomery County attorney and real estate developer, joins the CMMC staff as the program's director.

Montgomery County has provided "seed money" to get the program started and fund operating expenses for the first 12 months. At present we are seeking donations to fund the $50,000 ongoing, revolving loan pool. We are also looking for individuals with expertise in accounting, computers, law and marketing to act as business mentors to these entrepreneurs. Lastly, if you know a small business that could benefit from this program, or a person wanting to start a small business, let us know.

Please refer questions and leads to Warren Rosenfeld at (301) 762-8682, ext. 125.

Attention CCC Parents

The Parent Night Out program will be held on the second Friday of the month in December (Dec. 14) instead of its regularly scheduled night. The program is a co-op child care to support families who wish to have some couple time without leaving their children at home.

Children of all ages have fun with their church friends in the fellowship hall at Marvin Memorial, enjoy a snack together and end the evening with a video in room 204, chosen by the family who is on duty that evening. It is held from 6:30 p.m. -- 10 p.m., normally on the third Friday of each month.

If you are interested, please sign up on the bulletin board, or call Glenda Neal (301) 622-3948 with your questions.

Read Up On Book Club

The next meeting of the book club will be on Sun., Jan. 27 at the home of Lois Todhunter (301) 365-8512. Come after church (5:30 p.m. or 6 p.m.) and bring a sandwich. Drinks and dessert will be provided. We are reading "The Rector's Wife," by Joanna Trollope. If you get through that one fast, you can also read "Marrying the Mistress" by the same author.

Christmas Memorial Gifts

We would like to remember our loved ones and special blessings at Christmas. You are invited to do so by making a donation (of any amount) to the Deacons Fund. The people remembered or the celebrated events will be listed in the worship bulletin.

Members who have received support from the Deacons Fund know what a blessing this can be in times of crisis and illness and often write to the deacons thanking all who have given. In order to have names listed in the bulletin, the form below must be received in the church office by Mon., Dec. 10.

CCC Personals

Thank you so very much for all the prayers, cards and calls while I was in the hospital. It is such a joy to be a part of this loving and caring community.

Linda Carder

I need input on a questionnaire that I'm doing for a Studying Congregations class at Wesley Seminary. The deadline is in less than two weeks, so I really need input by Dec. 5 if at all possible. I would like input from as large a range of people (old, new, members, visitors, staff, youth) as possible.

Elaine Wunderlich has kindly put the questionnaire on the web site, so it is pretty easy to access and send electronically. Just click on the Postings part of the web site, or use this link: http://www.christ-ucc.org/CCCQuestionnaire.htm. I will also bring some print copies to church.

If you can, please fill it out and ask someone else to do the same. Thanks so much for helping me out!

Felicity Wright, (301) 608-0454; fwright@rwd.com

I began attending CCC in August of this year, on the recommendation of Rev. Mike Morse, who was the pastor of Hope UCC in Alexandria before his retirement in 1999. I am enjoying singing in the choir, and making a whole new set of friends at CCC. I have been active in the Potomac Association and Central Atlantic Conference in the past, and was most recently the music director at Hope. This past summer, I graduated from Matthew Fox's University of Creation Spirituality (Oakland, CA) with a doctor of ministry in creation spirituality. My work in this field includes creating forms of worship and ritual that are based on the cosmology we know today.

On the winter solstice, Fri., Dec. 21, I will host a ritual in my home on Capitol Hill from 8-11 p.m. I invite all to attend who are interested in learning about creation spirituality, and how celebrating the cosmic wheel of the year can enhance our appreciation of our faith and relationship to the natural world. For more information, please call me at (202) 546-7208, and visit my website at http://www.gaiarising.org.
